1916 Easter Rising
The Easter Rising, also known as the Easter Rebellion, was an armed revolt in Ireland during Easter Week in April 1916. Galway rebels, made up of mostly local volunteers, led the largest raid outside of Dublin. They captured prisoners, bombed a bridge, a railway line and took up position near Athenry in County Galway.
Athenry was one of the few places outside Dublin to take part in the Easter Rising when 600 Volunteers took over the Agricultural College in Athenry. This is their story!
