Representations have been made to An Post regarding the ‘downgrading” of the Athenry Post Office. The following letter was the reply received from An Post.

“Mr Noel Treacy TD,

Minister of State,

Department of Agriculture and Food,

Agriculture House.

Dublin 2.

17 June 2003

Dear Minister

Your recent further representations to our Area Manager, Galway, Aidan O’Donnell, regarding the re-designation of Athenry Branch Office as a Sub Post Office have been passed to me for attention.

The position in relation to this office has not changed from that which was outlined in my earlier reply, a copy of which is enclosed.

ln summary:

There are no plans to close Athenry Post Office;
There are no plans to ‘downgrade’ the services available to our customers in the town;
The re-designation of our least busy Branch Offices as Sub Offices is a nationwide programme which is vital to the future viability of the Post Office network;
The re-designation programme is supported by the representative body of the staff concerned;
Inclusion in the programme is based solely on the volumes of business transacted at the offices concerned – any concession of special status to an individual office on the basis of other, extraneous factors would undermine the entire programme.

I trust this clarifies the position adequately and thank you for your interest in the matter.

Yours sincerely

John Hynes

Group Chief Executive”
