Operating since April 2003, the Athenry Adolescent Support Programme is a new joint initiative between the Western Health Board and Foróige, the National Youth Development Organisation.

The aim of the project is to provide support to young people aged 10 – 18 years of age living in the Athenry area. Activities include Summer Programmes, Self-development Programmes and other recreational activities.

Activities and Programmes

The project provides specialised programmes such as:

Adolescent discussion groups
Personal Development/Diversionary Programmes
School Programmes
Special Interest Groups

The project also provides support initiatives for families and parents through the following:

Home visits by the project worker
Informal drop-in services to the project centre
Setting up of youth groups giving respite to parents

Other Services

Since the project was established, I have worked closely with and have established good working relationships with local services and agencies working in the community. For example, the schools such as the Presentation College, Vocational School, Boys’ Primary School and Girls’ Primary School, Gardai, Community Groups, Other Youth Support Services and Western Health Board Services.

Location of the Project’s Premises

The Athenry Adolescent Support Programme continues to operate from Caheroyan Commercial Centre, on the Monivea Road in Athenry. The project worker’s office is in one of the upstairs offices in the Centre and the Group Work room is situated on the ground floor. The project is the process of receiving funding, from the Galway Rural Development Company Limited, to purchase much needed office equipment and furniture.

The project is professionally staffed by Project Worker – Gerry Prior who hails originally from Leitrim. As he says himself, “l am delighted with how the summer programme and the Galway World Cup went last year, the young people really enjoyed themselves and all the adult volunteers from the community who helped me out. It wouldn’t have happened, had l not received the help and support of the adults who generously volunteered their time.

We had a great night in the Castlegate Hotel on the 4th December 2003 where we presented Certificates of Achievement to all the young people who took part in the summer programme. The young people stole the night. It was great to see so many parents there and representatives from all the different walks of life”.

Gerry is currently looking for adult volunteers to come and help out with providing activities throughout the coming months. He will provide adequate training and support. If you are interested, please contact Gerry at the following address and telephone number.
