Athenry Agricultural Show – Facebook

2001 was a very disappointing year for Agricultural events because of the foot-and-mouth crises in England and Northern Ireland.

The Athenry Agricultural Show Committee following a recommendation from the Irish Shows Association (ISA) decided to call off the 2001 show. This is only the second time since its inception in 1888 that the show had to be cancelled.

Thankfully due to the diligence, the safety measures that were put in place and the cooperation of all members of the public, organisations and organisers of events etc., helped to prevent the spread of the disease in this country.

Even though the event did not take place the show committee were active in updating and improving the equipment in preparation for next year’s show. Plans are at an advanced stage in converting the prize money to euros for 7th July 2002.

No voluntary organisation could run a large show such as Athenry without the generous support of sponsors, participants, competitors and the viewing public – to them we are deeply indebted and the committee looks forward to your continued support.

The Annual General Meeting of the Show will be held in January 2002, a definite date will be advertised in the local press and church newsletter and new members are always welcome.

This year will be the 5th year of the annual social which is due to take place in the Castlegate hotel on November 30th at 8 p.m. This night out is proving to be very popular and leads us all into the Christmas spirit.

Tickets are available from the Chairman Michael Higgins and the Secretary Mary O’Keeffe. Red circle the 7th July 2002 in your diary for the Athenry Agricultural Show.
