Athenry Anglers Club has gone from strength to strength in recent years, currently boasting an all-time high of over 100 members.
Annually six senior competitions, two junior and a special lady’s day competition are held. Trophies are also awarded for Heaviest Weight of Fish, Heaviest Trout, and Senior and Junior “Anglers of
the Year”.
Over the past four years, the local river has been stocked on several occasions with young and mature trout and with salmon parr. The river has been deepened and widened from Caheroyan to the Pound Bridge with the construction of several weirs along this stretch. These serve to oxygenate and hold water, thus encouraging fish life. Plans are advanced to continue this development below the Pound Bridge.
The People of the Parish must be thanked for contributing at Church gate collections which funded such developments and praise is also due to the successive hard-working committee.
Finally let us remember some of the great anglers who are no longer with us but whom will always remain dear to the Angling Club: John Crosby, Gerard Browne, Mixie Connolly, Thomas Cheevers Snr., Gerard Collins and Paddy Ryan.
