Athenry Camogie Club – Summer 2005

Home » Library » The Athenry Journal » Record

January 2005, a new calendar year, a new camogie year. That was the positive attitude at the Athenry camogie club social last December.

As January arrived, the Christmas tree was barely put back in the attic when training programme was laid out in front of us and the hard work began. The same words rang in every player’s ears “to play at the top level ……. .. you got to train at the top level!” New training sessions and drills were introduced. Move forward 5 months, the tempo of our game has been lifted. The hard work put in earlier on this year is shining through, so obvious in the league games. But make no mistake, the foot won’t be taken of the pedal, the drive and hunger is there now, as we await the championship. Who knows what is in store for Athenry camogie as we head into the summer months, but each step is a step forward for the players, management and the club.

Athenry Presentation College won the Colleges Junior All-Ireland title by defeating St. Mary’s Magherafelt. A fine display from Noreen Coen who was the team’s top scorer with 2-5. After losing out in this competition the Presentation girls came into this final determined to put the ghosts of last year to rest, doing so on a score line of 3-10 to 2-3. The Athenry camogie club had a great representation on this school panel: Stefanie O’Dwyer (Capt), Deirdre Ward, Laura Loughnane, Jessica Gill, Maeve Carr, Katie O’Dwyer, Noreen Coen, Marie Carroll, Alison Healy, Jacqueline Caulfield, Kayla Hallissey and Aisling Melia.

“Night at the Dogs” Fundraiser

The Club held a fund-raising night in the Galway Greyhound Track on the 29th April this year. 2004 had been a very successful year for the camogie club but at the beginning of 2005 the club were faced with the need to raise funds if we were to continue the level of success and progress that the club has had over the years. The night was a huge success thanks to the hard work put in by the committee members. Fund raising events like these don’t come together over night. It took weeks of hard work and a lot of organising for the night to run smoothly.

On behalf of the players, l would like to sincerely thank the fantastic committee for all their hard work, Mixie Donoghue, Julie Carr, Nora Gannon, Noel O’Sullivan and Ann O’Dwyer.

Also a special word of thanks to all our sponsors on the night.

St Patrick’s Day Parade

A special word of thanks to our wonderful “Chicks with Sticks” who participated in the parade this year. Great fun was had by everyone and the club wishes to thank everyone who helped out with the float on the day.
