The Christmas lights were better than ever this year after a major investment in a new wiring and metering system.

The switch on was a great success with a large crowd of very enthusiastic children and parents entertained by the school band under the direction of Mrs. Neylon. Santa Claus came by pony and trap and was a big hit; he was also very busy at his base in the Heritage Centre where he met hundreds of children in the run up to Christmas.

The lights themselves worked very well with minimal interruptions. There were major costs involved in putting the new system in place, and the Athenry Community Council whose project the lights are, continues to fundraise to cover the cost. A street and church gate collection raised more than €3,000 and some local businesses have been very generous.

In future the maintenance cost should be reasonable so if anyone wishes to contribute it will help to further what is a very worthwhile project.
