Senior Hurlers Win Reeves Cup.

The Reeves cup, became Athenry’s first major hurling title in 1967.
In a gale swept final played at Duggan Park, Ballinasloe, Athenry shocked Fohenagh from East Galway. Against the wind in the first half goals from Ignatius Madden and Michael Treacy kept Athenry in touch as they trailed by 3. 5 to 2. 0 at the break. With wind advantage in the second half Athenry piled on the pressure and in the eight minute Noel Keogh lashed in a goal. Another goal from Eamon King near the end decided the issue in favour of Athenry with a final scoreline of 5. 2 to 3. 5.
Team: Gerry Burke, Bill Conway, Anthony Freaney, Frank Brody, T.J. Jordan captain, Richie Williams, Tom Burke, Ray Glynn, Anthony Poniard, Noel Keogh, Michael Treacy, Hubert Conway, Ignatius Madden, Martin Rooney, Jack O’Shea, Eamon King.
The Reeves Cup, we understand, was presented by the New York GAA Board to a visiting Galway football team in the 1930s. However, it was never played for in football but was given to the Hurling Board instead.
