Athenry Medieval Festival Company Ltd – August 1996
The most spectacular, action packed Athenry Medieval Festival to date will run from August 15th, Lady Day, to Sunday 18th August.
The bands in the Square every night will include the one and only Paddy Cole, The Chart Busting Big Generator, the fantastic Kilfenora Céili Band and the fabulous sounds of Stocktons Wing.
Major events will be the Medieval Fayre, including the National Sheaf-Throwing Championship and a wonderful display of Archery by the Longbow Association of Ulster, Air Drama, Old Tyme Hurling – 84 players – and no rules), Workshops by Terry Willers (the Irish Times cartoonist, a car treasure hunt and the most spectacular stupendous Medieval Pageant ever seen in Athenry will include a Wedding feast, featuring music by Lés Minestrals (our local musicians), Jousting and The Battle all followed by a marvellous Fireworks display on Sunday night the 18th of August.
Children of all ages will revel in the two day Children’s Festival which includes a Teddy Bears Picnic, Bobo the Clown, the Bouncing Castle, Sports Day (including Obstacle Races and a Tug of War, a Magic Show for an hour in the Town Hall, Pavement Art, a Pet Show with Pony Rides, and also Face Painting. There will also be Children’s Drama in the Town Hall, a fabulous Fancy Dress Competition, courtesy of the ICA and Martin Burke and a Monster Table Quiz.
Indeed, such is the pressure of events that the festival committee have decided to run some fringe events on Wednesday the 14th of August. A display of Art and a Photographic Exhibition will both open that day and by popular demand The Steam Gauzzlers will play in the Square on the night.
We are pleased to announce two events in the Castle by kind permission of National Monuments. On August 9th the Bells of Mayo will perform an exciting programme of Camponology and Song and on August the 14th we have a Poetry and Music Evening sponsored by Galway Arts Council.
ln the lead up to the Festival, a number of workshops will take place. Athenry Medieval Festival takes a great deal of pride in the number of local adults and children who take part in the Festival Workshops will include gymnastics, mask making, street theatre, dancing and there will be a Weapon Workshop for a month before the festival.
This year’s gigantic pageant will need larger armies and we are appealing to all men, boys over l4 and ladies to take part in the battle and come to rehearsals. We also need stewards, security people and lots of help. A wonderful video edited by Sean Purcell of Turas Medieval Drummers will be shown in a number of venues in Athenry and we hope that all previous Norman and Irish fighters will inspire their friends and neighbours to take part in this year’s gala event!
