The Athenry footballers captured the County (B) Championship on Saturday 2lst October by defeating Kilconly at Tuam Stadium.

Athenry, not known for its football resources, overcame a Kilconly side with a very determined team display. The game was not a thriller, though it had the passion, excitement and drama that kept the followers anxious to the end. Brilliant displays by both defences ensured a low scoring game. The only goal of the game was scored by Eugene Cloonan after twenty minutes which was Athenry’s first score.

This was followed by a John Feeney free and a Cathal Daly point. At half time Athenry led by 1-2 to 0-3. Athenry opened the second half of the game with another John Feeney free. Kilconly replied with two more points, though Feeney responded with another well taken free kick. Kilconly reduced the deficit to a point with a brilliant point from county star Brian Moran. This was the last score of the game, though chances were missed by both sides. The final score was Athenry l-4, Kilconly 0-6. Athenry can thank their brilliant defence, especially John Feeney, who often assisted forwards with his running play, and Eugene Cloonan’s goal in the first half. Congratulations to Roy O’Brien and selector Paddy Kelly and the whole minor panel for putting in the effort and achieving this historic win. After the game, the Athenry squad went on a historic tour with the cup to Knockbrack to hail their Captain, Bernie Ryan and Keith Qualter.

Thanks to those who lit bonfires and took part in the celebrations.

Please spare a thought for Gerard O’Shea who could not play in the final due to a shoulder injury, without him we may not have reached the final.
