It’s Showtime Again

Since its rebirth after a 42 year pause, Athenry Musical Society has been moving from strength to strength. So far we have had two wonderful shows, Fiddler on the Roof, Feb. 2000, and Anything Goes, April 2001. Pat Naughton as Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof received a nomination for the much coveted AIMS Best Male Vocal Award and Paula Short received a nomination for Best Director for Anything Goes. Both shows were a credit to all involved.

2002 being the centenary of the birth of Richard Rodgers, it seems only fitting that Athenry Musical Society should perform the Rodgers & Hammerstein production “Oklahoma”. “Oklahoma”, the first Rodgers & Hammerstein Musical was also the first of a new genre, representing a unique fusion of Rodgers’ musical comedy and Hammerstein’s operetta. It also marked the beginning of the most successful partnership in Broadway musical history.

Once again Athenry Musical Society’s show is being produced by Paula & Philip Short of Kiltulla. The show has been cast and rehearsals begin on Monday, 7th January in the Castlegate Hotel at 7.3Op.m. and new members are, of course, always welcome. The show will be opening on Thursday 14 February and running until Sunday l7th February 2002.

The new Committee was elected last June and fundraising has already begun with a full house for the Table Quiz on October 4th. Many thanks to Christy Archer for a most enjoyable night. Next big event will be a Race Night on Friday, 25th January in the Castlegate Hotel. This promises to be a night of great fun. Once again, the Society would like to thank the outgoing Committee for their tremendous work and would also like to extend a very special word of thanks to all sponsors, patrons and supporters of the Musical Society, who’s continued generosity is so vital and greatly appreciated.
