Athenry Musical Society – Summer 2003

Congratulations to the cast and crew of the Athenry Musical Society who have once again surprised and delighted the people of Athenry with their recent production of ‘Sugar’. Now in its fifth year of production, the familiar names and faces stood or rather danced and sang alongside the unfamiliar ones, working exhaustively for 8 weeks to produce this hilarious comedy. Tears of laughter rolled down the faces of the audience at the antics of the cast. It is hard to forget the vision of ‘dirty old men’ in wheelchairs chasing after ‘saucy young girls’ or the sight of tap dancing gangsters dying a rhythmic death, not to mention the wonderful performances of ‘Sugar’ and the mind boggling sight of ‘Daphne & Josephine’, (great legs, lads).

Pat Naughton, Caitriona OConnell and Peter Kennedy who won best comedial award at the AIMS Awards in Kilkenny

Special congratulations must be given to Brian Brady who received an award as runner up in the Best Stage Manager category and to Peter Kennedy who took first place as Best Comedian in this year’s prestigious AIMS awards ceremony held in Killarney in June. These awards are the ’Oscars” for Irish Musical Societies and are a great honour to win. We as a society are very proud of these achievements, well done lads you did us proud, and well done to the entire group who made it happen.

As a new member of the group and to the town of Athenry it is hard to find words to express the warmth and camaraderie to be experienced by becoming involved with the society and with the town. Be it as a member of the cast, the stage crew, the set builders, the ‘go-fors’ or one of the many helpers who work together to make a show happen, including the audience, you know you are part of something special, part of a community that cares.

Ok enough mush from me, we are now starting again for our new show this coming Spring, and welcome as always anyone looking to meet new people, to dig in and give a hand, in any way, on stage or off and have a laugh.

Watch out for notices about auditions, which usually appear around the town in October/November. Everyone is welcome.

As a Society we would like to take the opportunity once again to thank everyone who has supported us through the years. We could not do this without you. Thank you so much. it is really appreciated. It is an honour and a pleasure to be a part of any Musical Society, but more so to be part of the Athenry Musical Society.
