Athenry Soccer Club provides a great service for the community.  We provide an opportunity for kids and adults to play soccer by providing them with pitches to play on, a floodlit training area and transport to and from matches.  We have a very hard working committee with Tommy Fahy as Chairman, Paul Mitchell Secretary, Timmy Holian Treasurer, Michael Dunleavy PRO, Michael Morrissey President, Peter Gilhooley, Finian Gardner, ‘Mixer’ Quinn and Conor O’Grady.

Membership is £30 for seniors, £15 for students, £10 for 16 to 18 year olds and £5 for under 16s and £5 for non – playing members, with a 20% discount for family members.

All new members are welcome.

Teams: At the moment we are fielding 2 teams at senior level, a Ladies team and one each at the under 17, 14, 13, 12, 11 and 10 age groups.  Our senior teams train in Raheen at 7pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays with matches every weekend.  Our under 17s train every Wednesday at 5 pm with matches every second weekend.  Our under 14s and 13s train every Wednesday at 6pm in the Presentation gym Athenry – again with matches every second weekend and our under 10s, 11s and 12s train ever Tuesday at 6pm in the Presentation Gym and Saturday morning at 10.30 am in Moonbaun with their leagues starting in April.  The managers of the teams are as follows; Senior and Reserve: Michael Dunleavy, selectors: Tommy Fahy, Peter Gilhooley, Under 17: Johnny Delancy and Michael Dunleavy.  Under 13 and 14: Tommy Fahy and Pete Gilhooley, and Under 10,11 and 12: Timmy Holian and Ladies team: Terry Nolan and Michael Doherty.

After a very successful season last year our seniors are not doing as well this season but are holding a mid-table position in Div. 2A.  This is due to the fact that we have a lot of young players in the team and we lost a number of older players from last year but at the moment there are two 17 year olds in the team and 5 under 21s which should give us hope for the future.  Our reserve team are also in a mid – table position with again 5 or six under 20s on the team.  Our Ladies team also finished mid table.

At under age level we are mid table again in all the leagues after winning our first underage trophies last year at under 13 level, winning the league and cup double.  We have over 100 under – age players training at the moment.  We also have players involved with Galway teams in Micky Quinn at under 14 level and Stephen Rabbitte at under 13 level.

Coaches: We have 2 EA.I. coaches in the club at the moment in Michael Dunleavy (Level 2, Intermediate) and Timmy Holian (Level 1). We also have people who have attended coaching courses in Sean Mulroe, Peter Gilhooley, Tommy Fahy and Dessie Glynn.

Developments: Off the pitch we have developed Raheen and we have just completed phase one of our development programme in Moonbaun which we purchased 3 years ago.

Sponsors: We would like to thank our major sponsors during the past year: Dobbyn & Coffey’s, Peter Gilhooley, Spar Foods, Heineken, Byrne Mech, Martin Maloney, The North Gate Bar, ‘Mixer’ Quinn, Fahy’s Foodmarket, Michael Morrissey and Nolan’s Foodstore.

Events for Christmas and New Year: Our Christmas social will take place on Sunday 27th December at 8pm in Dobbyn,& Coffey’s with tickets at £13 each for the meal and £5 for the ‘afters’ from any committee member.

There will be an under-age disco with a mineral bar in Dobbyn & Coffey’s on Wednesday 23rd December from 9pm to 1am.

We are also holding a raffle with 1st prize of a trip to England to a Premier league game and various other prizes including a colour TV, hamper and travel voucher.  Tickets are on sale at £1 each from all club members and local shops and pubs.  The draw will take place on Friday 1st January at a Soccer Club disco in Dobbyn’s & Coffey’s.

Five – a – side Tournament: Our Annual Indoor Soccer 5 a side tournament which has been running for 18 years will take place at the end of January 1999.  Entries can be given to any committee member.  This tournament attracts up to 90 teams from all over Connacht and is one of the biggest indoor tournaments in the country with a prize fund of up to £500 sponsored by Heineken.  It is in fact ‘the’ Connacht indoor tournament.  All entries are welcome.

We hope that everybody will attend these events as it takes a lot of money to run a soccer club we would appreciate your support.

St. Stephan’s Day Match: Our annual St. Stephens Day Captain’s versus President’s eleven will take place in Raheen at 2pm on Saturday 26th December, Kevin Fadden will captain the Captain’s eleven and James Redmond will captain the President’s eleven.  The squads will be announced at a later date.

There will be food in the North Gate pub after the match and all players and supporters are welcome.  We would like to thank Gerry and Mary Burke for their continued sponsorship.

Finally, we would like to congratulate Athenry Hurling Club on their great achievements in the past year and hope they go on to win the All Ireland title.  Perhaps one day we will be able to bring as much success to the town of Athenry.
