Athenry Soccer Club Development Plan 2000

Athenry soccer club was founded in 1971. The club has continued to grow and develop since then. Originally one adult team represented the club in league competition. During the 1999/2000 season, 13 teams will represent the club in league and cup soccer from under 10s to adults.

The club developed an underage policy to nurture and develop the youth as it progressed through the age levels to senior level. This policy has helped form the basis of the senior success being experienced by the club. We were promoted to division 1 last season and we won our divisional cup.

Several senior members of the clubs have attended FAI training courses and have received their coaching badges.

The under 12 team along with 6 adult members enjoyed a successful coaching trip to Leeds United earlier this year. During 1994 the club wisely decided to purchase grounds at Moanbaun, Athenry. These grounds have since been developed to provide good quality playing pitches which are adequate for playing matches for all teams.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to play matches and train on the same pitches, particularly during winter. The present playing pitch becomes unplayable from an early stage at each season due to over use and inclement weather conditions.

After several severe winters, the committee decided to investigate the feasibility of an all weather training pitch. As the number of members has steadily increased over the last number of years, and the continued success of teams it was decided to develop a state of the art facility that would make it possible to train all year round irrespective of the weather. This flood-lit all weather pitch will be constructed at our grounds at Moanbaun Athenry.

It is club policy to make our facilities available to everyone in the community and beyond who wish to use them. This facility will be available to the general public for use and will benefit many clubs in the area. Athenry is centrally located and has approximately 20 clubs and organisations within a 20 minute drive. These include Athletics, GAA, Rugby Foróige, Schools and other soccer clubs. These clubs will benefit from this facility for many years into the future.

Construction of this facility begins in March 2001.

Athenry Soccer Club would like to thank all the sponsors and people who have helped make this project happen. We hope the community of Athenry will enjoy this facility for many years to come.
