The first match was played in South Park, Galway against West United and ended in a 1 – 1 draw with David Sweeney scoring for Athenry.  The Athenry team on that occasion was: Gerry Stack, John Quinn, G, O’Dowd, Leo Coffey, Michael Morrissey, Dessie Glynn, Gerry Doherty, Sean King, David Sweeney, Francis Kilkelly, Kieran Barrett and Patrick Flannery.

At present the club has a senior team and a reserve team and also juvenile teams at under 18,17,16,15,14,13, 12,1 1, and under 10 age groups.

The club has won senior leagues since its formation and also two senior cup competitions and has also got to the area finals in the F.A.I. cup competition and has also been to the quarter finals of the Connacht Cup.  The present senior team is at the moment joint 2nd in the league with only two defeats in the league this season and hopefully in with a good chance of promotion.  The reserve team has only one defeat and are also well placed in their league.  Both these teams are managed by Michael Dunleavy and Timmy Holian.

At under age level we have not yet won any trophies but the under-age side of the club was only set up again 8 years ago by Johnny Delaney and are improving all the time.  Our under 16 team of 2 years ago finished third in their league and reached the last 32 in Ireland in the F.A.I. cup and last year our under 12s finished third in their league and were unbeaten.  This year our under 13s are top of their league and hopefully have a good chance of success.

Our under aged teams are managed by the following Michael Dunleavy at under 17 and 18 levels, Mixer Quinn and Peter Gilhooley at under 16 level, Mixer Qinn and Timmy Holian at under 15 level, Paul Mitchell and Finian Gardner at under 14 level, Peter Gilhooley and Tommy Fahy at under 12 and 13 levels and Timmy Holian at under 10 and 11 levels.
