Cup Glory for Athenry – 1st Time winners of the Connacht Cup

Athenry Soccer Club continued on it’s 2007 glory trail with a superb win over Carbury United, Sligo, in the final of the Connacht Cup, played in Terryland Park on Saturday evening, 19th May.

Watched by a large attendance, Athenry found themselves a goal down in the opening quarter of a tense and exciting match. Playing with a great determination and skill, Athenry levelled the score with a thrilling goal from Paddy Quinn. They took the lead with what could be the Goal of the season from Alan O’Donovan, who Beckham-like, fired a free kick into the top corner of the Carbury goal.

With their confidence high, Athenry stretched their lead to 4-1 with an Ollie Keogh goal followed by a fantastic penalty from ice-cool, Stephen Rabbitte.

Wild and joyous celebrations followed in the Raheen Woods Hotel, where Fr. Gerry Burns gave a great speech.

There was a lot of silverware on show including the Premier League and Under 16 cups.
