The 1995 Galway Community Games Chess Tournament will be held in Athenry in June following on the success of the Athenry under 16 chess team in winning the gold medals in Galway last year.
Last year’s team was John O’Keeffe, Donal Flynn, John Caulfield, Brian Kirwin, Joanne Kelly, Michael O’Regan and Ronan Cahill. They beat the holders Salthill in the county final and Roscommon-champions in the Connacht semi-final before losing to Castlebar in the final. Castlebar went on to win the gold medals in Mosney.
A local tournament held in March and April this year was won by John O’Keeffe who beat Donal Flynn in the final.
