Coldwood National School 1996

Info

Coldwood N.S boys and girls had a very busy and successful year in the sporting arena. The boy’s hurling team won the league and championship. This was the inaugural year of the winter league played from October to April.

Coldwood were grouped with Athenry Boys N.S. Killeenen, Monivea, Brackloon and Kiltulla. They succeeded in topping the group with comfortable wins in all games. Quarter final opponents were Maree, and in the semi-final they beat Ballindereen. The final was against Killeeneen and it was a hotly contested game with Coldwood emerging the winners.

ln the championship they -were grouped with Killeenadeema, Castlegar and Labane. They again emerged top of the group here and beat Fohenagh in the semi-final to set up a final meeting with Labane. Labane, coached by our local man Mike Burke, were formidable opponents and after what was described by one scribe as “one of the best school finals in years” Coldwood emerged victorious for the second time in succession (9B last year) on a scoreline of 4-0 to 1-4.

Coldwood had nine heroes on the day, but special mention must go to Adrian Cullinane who was rock solid at fullback, the tireless work of Damien Rooney in midfield and captain and prolific goal scorer William Donnellan.

They almost made it a hat trick of victories because the mini-sevens I.N.T.O. Competition our team was only narrowly beaten by the eventual Galway and Connacht winners.

Not to be outdone the girls made their own piece of history. Coached by Tom Page they became the first team from the school to win the Galway and Connacht Cross-Country title. The team consisted of Paula Rooney, Aoife Rooney. Ann M. Finnerty, Fiona Page, Krystal Ruddy, Nicola Ruddy and Fiona Langan.

Thanks to all the parents who provided support. transport. sponsorship and the social night in Holland’s Briar.
