Community Council News  Sept 2007

A meeting of Athenry Community Council was held on Monday 9th Sept. 2007. 10 members attended.

Minutes: The Minutes of previous meeting of 26th. June were read and adopted by the members.

Matters arising: A Brazilian group living in Athenry have booked the community hall for 2 nights a week and the chairman reported that the group had painted the inside of the hall and that a satisfactory agreement had been reached with the group.

Wall at Raheen: Soccer club have agreed to take away the old wall, as it is dangerous especially for spectators. Cllr. Peter Feeney reported that Galway Co. Council was considering tenders for the erection of traffic lights and footpath on the Tuam Rd. Bridge.

Treasurers Report: The treasurer reported a credit balance of €7000.

New Community Civic Centre: It was reported to the meeting that the Courts Service had only made phone contact with the committee and that they are not interested in the offer that we had made them. Written confirmation of this had been promised but as yet had not been received. The meeting agreed that the committee should progress the project towards the planning stages.

Athenry Environmental Network: Mr. Patrick Creed from this group outlined to the meeting that they were a group set up to promote environmental awareness in the Athenry area. They had organized a workshop at the Community Hall for the coming weekend.

Lotto Collectors: The meeting invited members to ‘sign up’ for the coming months to collect the lotto envelopes and help out with the weekly draw.

A.O.B.: Issues raised: the new roundabout at Prospect, a pole on Davis Street footpath, which is a hindrance to pedestrians and the issue of Christmas lights for 2007. Cllr. Feeney reported that due to the finding of part of the Loro gate at Prospect, the decision on the treatment of the monument and the type of junction built would rest with the Minister for the Environment. It is expected that this decision will be made by the Minister in conjunction with archaeologists from his department in the coming weeks. The council took a decision to write to the businesses in the parish to seek their help with the funding of the Christmas lighting of the town.
