Five schools from the Athenry Parish took part in retreats, at Esker Retreat House, for children to be confirmed this term – Boys National School, Scoil Naofa, Lisheenkyle, Carnaun and Coldwood. The theme of the retreats was based on St. Luke’s Gospel V41-52.

Topics discussed included: Where our Parents have brought us to i.e. Life, Baptism, Communion, Family etc. How our parents have looked after, cared for and nurtured us. The necessity for thanking them and appreciating them. The changes we will have to face in the coming years, and the choices we will have to make. Discussions were lively and all children participated.

Some comments from children – ‘I enjoyed the whole day because the teachers were very nice. I met new friends, I learned a lot, Fiona Ni Chobhthaigh. ‘l thought the retreat was very good because I had a better outlook on Confirmation at the end of the day and l also made lots of new friends, Yvonne O’Brien. ‘l enjoyed my day at Esker and would like to go again’, Martin Burke. ‘We made a card for our mother and father to say thank you for everything. ‘I enjoyed the day because it was fun’ Michael Fahy.

There was also a social aspect to the day, as children met with children from other schools and enjoyed the beautiful surroundings of Esker. Although there was a serious element to the day the children, teachers and retreat team all had a very enjoyable time. We look forward eagerly to next year’s retreat.
