Donnacha’s Ornate Gate with medieval images of Athenry, situated opposite Abbey Glen estate on the road to Craughwell

On the road to Craughwell out of Athenry, just after you pass the Priory ruins, you may have seen a surprisingly ornate gate out of the corner of your eye. If you take a step closer, you’ll see that the structure is interwoven with symbols of Athenry’s medieval heritage, such as the castle, the arch, and a ploughman. This is the work of Athenry’s resident sculptor, Donnacha Cahill, who was a finalist in the recent RDS“Craftsperson of the Year” competition.

“lt was basically a 3-metre high hot air balloon!” said Donnacha of his competition piece “Beir Greim Air!” “It’s currently on exhibit in Artist Direct in Limerick, along with some other sculptures of mine. I was delighted to get so far in such a prestigious competition.” Donnacha’s work is also on exhibit in Kenny’s Gallery, Galway.

He also works as a commercial sculptor, creating contemporary metalwork for homes and his company, Red Hill Sculpture, has been based in Sliabh Rua for the past two years. Asked about a typical client, he says “The people who come to me are just everyday men and women who want something a little different for their houses. They want to put their own personal stamp on their home, and they like that they can be engaged with the design process when they hire me.

lt’s really satisfying for them to see their creative ideas coming to life, and in pieces that they use and see every single day.”

Donnacha also accepts corporate commissions.
