A Presidential Year for Athenry

At the opening of Athenry ADC IT Centre: Martin McA|eese, Peadar Monaghan, President of Ireland, Mary McAleese, Gerry Ahern, Cait Curran, Cllr. Peter Feeney, John Kennedy, Noel Treacy T.D.

As we come to the end of yet another year, it is pleasing to reflect back on what has been both an eventful and positive 2004 for the Parish of Athenry.

The highlight came on September 10 last, when the President of reland, Mary McAleese, was given a great Athenry welcome as she visited the Heritage Centre and opened the new Community IT Centre. It was a great day for the Parish and people ofAthenry, and one that will live on in the memory for many years to come. Can any of our readers remember the last time a sitting President visited the town?

Our sports people have yet again achieved great things and done us proud in 2004. The Camogie team had both County and ll-Ireland wins, the Athenry Hurlers are marching towards Croke Park again, after winning both the County and Connacht championships. And what a superb achievement by the Athenry Golf Club, receiving the Connacht Shield. Congratulations to all involved and good luck for next year.

The strong community spirit that exists in the town showed itself strongly when many locals ran in the Women’s Marathon to support Cystic Fibrosis and Athenry Cancer Care. The new Community IT Centre has proven to be a great success, providing both a learning opportunity and great fun for many people.

The infrastructure of the town continues to grow, as progress is made on new retail and housing developments and, of course, the new road. This all bodes well for the future prosperity of Athenry.

Importantly, Athenry now has a voice at the County Council, following the election of our new Councillor.

Such a busy, successful year for our growing, caring community! If we continue to work together and support each other, who knows, 2005 may be even better.

All at ADC take this opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy and successful New Year.
