Galway Citizens Information Centre is one of many such Centres around the country.

Citizens Information Centres provide free, confidential, and impartial information on any subject, to all.

Information is provided on rights and entitlements, and on a broad range of services, for example, social welfare, employment, health services, redundancy, income tax, housing, family law, consumer affairs, and local organisations and activities. There is no charge for the service and it is available to all sections of the community. It is important to stress that this service is confidential.

Galway CIC also assists people to get their entitlements through such things as filling in forms, and if necessary, contact government departments or other agencies on their behalf. In addition, the CIC can help people who are appealing against decisions, and from time to time, may even accompany them to an appeal.

An important feature of the service is the comprehensive nature of the information it supplies. For instance, an unemployed person will receive information about a range of aspects of unemployment – not just social welfare, but also the tax implications, the redundancy entitlements, and the implications for health entitlements and for mortgage or rent payments.

The Citizens Information Centre stocks a full range of information leaflets and application forms on public services, along with useful information on local organisations. There is also information relating to those with disabilities. The organisation is wheel chair accessible and is anxious to welcome queries from the disabled.

One can also access Galway CIC on its website: where along with an introduction to the organisation, one can view it’s ‘frequently asked questions’ section, or avail of the ‘information on-line’ service, which provides links to local on-line information and also useful national information databases, such as The Citizens Information Database, and Oasis.

Each Citizens Information Centre is an independent organisation, but all are registered with Comhairle, a public service body that promotes information and access to social services. Comhairle funds the Galway Citizens Information Centre.

Galway CIC is open from 9.30am until 5.00pm Monday to Friday.
