The Galway Races bring out the ‘Punter’ even in those who rarely place a bet or a flutter on a nag from one end of the year to the other. It’s a time when you see people at the Ballybrit course or in the bookies office who you thought would never lower themselves to venture paddling in the gambling pool. The Galway Races have that kind of effect on people at this time of year, when they let their hair down, forget about the overdraft and the everyday stresses of life and let themselves ‘go’ for the week.

Every punter dreams of making a ‘killing’ on the horses, and give the local Bookies a lot of sleepless nights thinking about all the ‘lolly’ they might have to pay out on a good gamble. The thought of this can make the regular punter break out in a ‘gambler’s rash’, for which there is no known cure.

So, for all those once-in-a-year punters, News and Views asked 6 Athenry Tipsters to give their selections for the principal races of the week, the Plate and Hurdle, with the view of mounting a concerted attack on the local Bookies.

These magnificent 6 were reluctant to give their names, and so respecting their confidences, we give each a number.
