New Community Centre for Athenry – Summer 2001

This is the latest draft of the plan for a new Community Centre we hope to build beside the Boys’ school at Knockaunglas.

The Community Council would welcome input from any individual or group on the project. We have already met the Drama Group and the Musical Society on a number of occasions and greatly welcome their views and support. We want to make this venture a community-wide one and it will succeed only if we get the broadest possible support.

Big productions

The proposed building will have about 10,00O sq. ft of floor space. The main feature is the hall / auditorium where we expect to provide some tiered seating. The stage area will be large enough to accommodate large musical productions with the standard backstage facilities. There are a number of offices and meeting-rooms, which will be available to all organisations. There are larger open areas suitable for aerobics / keep fit activities etc. The building will be equipped with a kitchen area and a bar – planned for occasional use at this stage.

We hope organisations and groups presently using the Community Hall on Clarke Street will move with us if the building goes ahead. Final plans and planning permission are the next steps. The Court Services are being kept up to date with the plans and, if suitable, they may decide to use the new centre as a courthouse, subject to agreement.

Car parking

We believe the site for the centre is ideal – the area is zoned for Community Use and has a large area for car parking, which would be beneficial to the town in itself. Today we can only contemplate the building of such a centre because of the farsightedness of Community Councils over the past twenty-five or so years. Their decisions to purchase the present hall and the site in question, provides a great platform to build on.

Community focus

There are many things Athenry needs. Infrastructure like roads, proper planning, etc. we have little control over, but this is an ambitious project, which, with state help, we can do for ourselves. It would provide a centre for the community, facilities for all age groups and a welcome addition in terms of social and cultural activities.

Larger scale plans can be viewed at the ADC Offices, Athenry, and we hope to have them on view in various locations around the town.

We welcome any ideas or help. Please contact any Community Council member.
