Those travelling on the Athenry/Galway Road will have noticed major works being carried out by Teagasc at Mellows College. Ger Shortle, College Principal, explained that one substantial entrance is planned to replace several that exist at present. ‘We are creating a filter lane to enter and exit the college’ he said. ‘The old wall is being cleared and some trees removed to improve visibility. Safety is our prime concern and visibility is poor at exits. A new distributor road within the grounds will service the various Teagasc offices on the site. Many people are unaware of the number of services provided at the college. We employ 120 people and we have the Galway Advisory Headquarters, the National Centre for Sheep Research, Bovine Reproduction Centre and the National Rural Development Headquarters’.

According to Ger signage to these various offices will be improved to make people more aware of the college functions. He was unable to say what the exact cost of the improvements is but €2 million has been spent in upgrading the college premises, €600,000 in the current year.
