Newcastle Community Council held its AGM at the end of January. The following offices were elected:

Peadar Monaghan: Chairman, Florrie 0’Shea: Vice-Chairperson, Anne Howley: Secretary, Shirley Keogh: Ass. Secretary Maura Molloy: Treasurer, Mattie Gannon: Ass. Treasurer, Billy Caulfield: P.R.O.

The outgoing Chairman Tom Howley opened the meeting by welcoming all members and then gave a detailed report of Community Affairs to-date. The F.Á.S. Scheme which we have in operation for the past 2 years, has seen a lot of improvements in the Community: stone walls built, swings and slides provided for schools. General maintenance of: Community Centre, Safety locks, Chairs, Lights etc installed for the elderly under the Community Alert Scheme.

Our Community Centre is fully booked out every night with basketball, soccer, handball etc and we thank everybody for their support. At Christmas, we had a Sale of Work in the Presentation College gym in Athenry which was very successful, thanks to the local support and sponsorship from the local business people.

Every Christmas there is a community night in the Centre, music by our local man Kevin Rohan and Rodney’s Glory and is an enjoyable night for everybody.

We are delighted to see that out local hero P.J. Molloy won Athenry Person of the Year Award. On a sad note, one of our Senior citizens Mrs Winnie Rohan died peacefully at her residence. We offer our sincere sympathy to the Rohan family.

For our young people from 10 yrs to 12yrs we have a Foróige club, that meets every Friday night in the centre, under the leadership of Rita Keane and Anne Murphy who meet every Friday night. We would like to give a big thank you to those two people who give their time voluntary.

At the moment we are putting together a Work Plan for another 2 years F.Á.S. / C.E. Scheme, through which we hope to improve the facilities of our Community Centre.
