Tuam Herald reports “Vote of no confidence in Council Members” District Notes, Thursday, November 28, 2002
Several members of Athenry Community Council were scathing in their criticism of the local councillors for the Loughrea Electoral Area for what is seen as their neglect and disregard of Athenry. The criticism was levelled at the body’s recent AGM which was held in the Canton Hall. There was condemnation of the councillors’ support of excessive rezoning and the decision to grant planning permission for two houses against the walls of the Priory.
However, the most severe criticism was voiced in respect of the lack of the most basic infrastructure such as footpaths and the danger this presented to children walking to school over bridges with bad visibility and without footpaths. It was stated that councillors had given assurances three years ago at a public meeting that these issues would be addressed but nothing has happened and the town was being ignored.
The meeting ended with a unanimous vote of no confidence in the local councillors.
