References to Patrick Fitzpatrick of Newford (Athenry in the County of Galway)

At a Meeting of the Roman Catholic inhabitants of the Parish of Athenry in the County of Galway held in the Parish Chapel on Thurs.14th Oct. 1824, James Burke of Prospect Lodge in the Chair, the following Resolutions were unanimously agreed to:

• Resolved, That Dr. James Davis be requested to act as Secretary,

• That we adopt the collection of the Catholic Rent, conceiving that it will afford the most effectual means of obtaining for the Catholics of Ireland the Rights which have been so long and so unjustly withheld from them.

• That a Committee of six Persons be appointed for the purpose of making the necessary arrangements for the collecting of the Catholic Rent, and that said Committee be empowered to act to their numbers.

• That our Chairman be requested to act as Treasurer.

• That the Catholic Association possess our entire confidence, and are entitled to our gratitude for their zealous and able exertions to promote the welfare of the Country

• That our warmest Thanks are Justly due, and hereby given, to our talented countryman, Danial O’Connell, Esq. for his powerful and persevering advocacy of our Cause and particularly for having originated the measure of the Catholic Rent.

• That the Rev. Francis Prendergast senior, and the Rev. Francis Prendergast junior, our respected Parish Priest and his Coadjutor, are entitled to our particular Thanks, for having accommodated us with the use of the Chapel, and for their zealous co-operation in furthering the objects of this Meeting.

• That the foregoing Resolutions be published in the Dublin Evening Post, and in the Herald and Register.

Mr. Burke having left the Chair, and Patrick Fitzpatrick of Newford, Esquire being called thereto, the particular Thanks of the meeting were given to James Burke Esq. for his proper conduct of the Chair Patrick Fitzpatrick, Chairman James Davis, Secretary

Patrick Fitzpatrick Esq., solicitor, has been elected Clerk of the Crown for County Galway
(county and city) in place of Mr. Johnson, deceased.

Mr. Patrick Fitzpatrick of Newford, newly appointed Clerk of the Crown, is a Roman Catholic and probably the only Clerk of the Crown of that profession in Ireland.

Patrick Fitzpatrick of Newford House, Athenry is listed as a subscriber to ”Lewis’ Topographical Dictionary” (1837)

Mr. Levesay, agent of James Daly, Esq. in several contested elections, is mentioned as likely to succeed Mr. Fitzpatrick in the office of Clerk of the Crown for Galway County.

“The Dalys are a powerful clan just now, and unless the Galway people look to their Registries betimes, they will soon regain their former position as parliamentary miss-representatives of that important county.

We can scarcely conceive of anything more disgraceful than would be such a restoration”.
