Seisiún is a music trail through all four Provinces of Ireland where the visitor can join with the local traditional musicians, singers, dancers and storytellers for an evening of native entertainment.
A variety of venues throughout the country include títhe cheoil (cultural centres), hotels and community halls. Organised by Comhaltas Ceóltoirí Éireann, with grant-aid form the Dept. of Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and Islands, Seisiún 2003 was launched by Minister Sile De Valera, TD at the Fleadh Nua in Ennis on Sunday, 25th May.
Native music, song and dance are to be found in every corner of the land. Sometimes a little help is needed to find the discreet and intimate settings where time stands still and the performers while away the hours with exhilarating music making and where the visitor is always welcome.
Island of music
With the ever-increasing popularity of Irish music and dancing internationally, thousands of visitors to Ireland are now seeking out these unique artforms. They sometimes express disappointment at not being able to discover the music venues- “the hidden Ireland”. Seisiún will help to make their task easier and contribute towards presenting Ireland as an “Island of Music”.
Seisiún will have 42 venue-nights each week spread throughout the four provinces of Ireland. It will provide young performers, in partnership with the more seasoned players, with an outlet for their exceptional talents. Comhaltas is ideally suited to get Seisiún on the road. The cultural movement has 400 branches world-wide and last year their all-Ireland Fleadh Cheóil attracted 230,000 patrons.
