Hurling Championship Draws.

The draws for this year’s championships have been made. In the senior section Athenry are drawn in group B with Beagh, Tommy Larkins, Turloughmore and Portumna. By the time that Athenry open their 2009 championship against Beagh on April 26th next, some 31 weeks or 217 days will have passed since Beagh dumped Athenry out of the 2008 championship in Loughrea on September 21st. In May when Athenry will meet Portumna in the group game it is possible that the two clubs will be sharing 6 All Ireland Club titles surely a record for any county championship game in Ireland. We wish senior manager Billy Caulfield and his team well.

In the Intermediate championship Athenry are drawn with Rahoon/Newcastle, Abbeyknockmoy, Mullagh and Annaghdown.

The newly promoted Junior A team are alongside Tommy Larkins, Meelick Eyrecourt, Turloughmore ans Sylane.

The Junior C Hurlers have Gort, Carnmore, Liam Mellows, Ballindereen, Ardrahan, Moycullen, Sylane, Annaghdown, and Rahoon/Newcastle in their group.

In the Minor Hurling Athenry have to compete with Tommy Larkins, Craughwell, Athenry, Loughrea, Turloughmore, and Castlegar.

In the Under 21 Hurling Athenry are drawn to meet Clarinbridge. We wish all teams well.

Medal Presentation in Carnaun Club House

Special Guests were Joe Connolly, Captain of the All Ireland Winning Team of 1980 and Galway Footballer, Alan Burke.

Athenry GAA Club are having a Gala Function and medal presentation on Saturday March 7th in the Raheen Woods Hotel. The teams to be honoured are the 2008 Junior B hurling champions and the Junior A county football league champions. Tickets are only €2O and are available from Leo Coffey and Jarlath Cloonan.

Results

Athenry Under 21 football team defeated Menlough in the 2009 championship in Clonbern, the final score was Athenry 2-12, Menlough 1-O7. The Athenry team and scorers were: Bernie Ryan, Mark Healy, Shane Healy, James Divilly, Ciaran Cleary, Gary Moroney. Trevor Ruane, Michael Foran 0-02, Conor Lane 0-02, Shane Cahill, Thomas Divilly O-01, Conor Caulfield O-01, Conor Cannon 1-O2, Thomas Flynn 1-02, Daniel Hanlon, Dara Glynn, Sean Dooley, Mark Hannon O-O1, Conor Fanning 0-O1, Ian Caulfield, Keith Jordan, Derek Moroney. Management Team: Henry O’Hora, Timmy Rabbitt and Martin Whyte. Well done to all concerned!
