St. Mary’s GAA Juvenile Club, April 2007

Under 14 Football:

After a terrific season last year winning the championship and runners up in the league the team started off 2007 in winning ways with a win over Tuam in the league which was unfortunately followed by a loss to Annaghdown. Their next league game is away to football, kingpins, Corofin on Friday 27th April, which will be a good marker for the coming season. On Saturday 21st April they competed in the Feile blitz, which was held in Moycullen. After good wins over Michael Breathnachs and Mountbellew they were narrowly beaten by Beama who went on to win the competition. In the first round of the championship they face Clifden.

Under 14 Hurling:

Like the footballers this team entered the 2007 season as reigning county champions, but got off to a slow start losing to Ahascragh/Fohenagh and then to Tynagh/AbbeyDuniry. Facing Castlegar in the third game it was a must win situation and the team gave a rousing performance to win. In their final group game, which was played on Monday 23rd April in Ballinderreen they took on Ardrahan with a quarter final place at stake. Playing with the wind Athenry were ahead by 2-02 to 1 point at half time. In the second half they battened down the hatches and with exceptional performances by the backs against a very strong wind won out by 3-04 to 0-02. Athenry now go on to the county quarter-final which will be played on the Monday of the May bank holiday weekend.
