Taquin National School Reunion Weekend – Easter 1998

Home » Library » The Athenry Journal » Record

As promised in our last issue, we are now able to give you the schedule for the reunion weekend on 7th-8th-9th August next.

The weekend will commence with a special mass being celebrated at 8pm on Friday evening the 7th in the grounds of Tiaquin National School (weather permitting) if not Newcastle Church.  Chief Celebrant will be Fr. Michael Kelly past pupil from Doonane now P.P in Ballyvaughan Co. Clare. with the kind permission of Fr. Anthony King P.P Athenry.

Afterwards all roads lead to Monivea where the evening festivities begin in Ffrenches where the best barbeque this side of the rockies will take place.  Padraic McGann of Ffrenches assures me that it will be a night to remember.  The menu will consist of a choice of five main courses, nine salads and five deserts.  Music will be provided by Mr. Tiaquin himself Kevin Rohan and his band Rodney’s Glory.

On Saturday night the 8th the show moves to probably one of the best known locations in the country Burkes of Colmanstown, where Frank and Bernie Burke promises us another great night to revive us from the previous one.  A garden dance and barbeque is what is in store for us, music being provided for us by another past pupil J. J. Byrne and friends.  You can wander from the bar to the lounge to the garden at will and partake of the barbeque as required, and dance the night away.

We round off what will be a memorable weekend with a dance in the Newcastle Community Centre on Sunday 9th.  Frank and Bernie Burke will be in charge of the refreshments.

Tickets for the reunion weekend will go on sale on 15th June at the expected cost of £20 each.  Each ticket will allow you to gain entry to all three functions and partake of all the food provided. it is hoped to have Galway Bay F.M. in Tiaquin at some stage that weekend.  Other activities will be organised during the daytime on Saturday and Sunday the 8th and 9th (all ideas welcome).

As you know a book will be published containing an outline History of Tiaquin and it’s environs. 1 again urge everyone to root in the attic and drawers for any memorabilia that could be included in the book.  We are also looking for any school related material, articles, or of a local nature for possible inclusion in the book.  We also plan in having the weekend celebrations recorded on film and a video produced.  We would like to see the Tiaquin area remembered in Book and Video for generations to come.

We intend making banners welcoming home our emigrants.  Anybody who would like to help in any way – Come on board. Looking forward to meeting you all in August.
