Since 1985, Croí, the West of Ireland Cardiology foundation has been to the forefront in the fight against heart disease. Croí is a registered charity entirely dependent on voluntary effort. Public support has been outstanding and several millions of pounds have been raised to fund developments in three areas of activity : education, research and development of Cardiac Services and facilities.

The most recent milestone in its fundraising activities has been the achievement of a £1.25 million target towards the new Regional Heart Surgery Unit, incorporating a new Coronary Care Unit at University College Hospital, Galway.

One of Croi’s many fundraising activities is the annual ‘Round the Lakes’ fun cycle. The cycle is held in May every year and involves a short and a long route. The short route is 25 miles from Galway to Maam Cross and the longer route, 75 miles, continues from Maam Cross around Lough Corrib, through Cong and Headford and back to Galway. Cyclists collect sponsorship prior to the cycle and as well as serving a worthy cause they are also benefiting fitness wise from the event.

A group from Athenry has been taking part in the cycle for a number of years now and appreciate the wonderful response they get to their sponsorship appeals.
