Lisheenkyle NS enjoys a recent winning streak of prizes and awards writes Anne Keary

2003 has so far proved to be an extremely lucky one for Lisheenkyle National School. In March sixth class pupil, James Collins, was overall winner of the AIB club championship art competition, which netted a prize of €1000 for the school.

Tree Council award

Two Weeks later the third and fourth-class group scooped the national overall winner in their section of the National Tree Council competition for Primary Schools with an audio-visual form entry that featured in verse the life of Percy, the school pheasant. This time the prize was €50O and an invitation to meet the man himself, Derek Mooney, at the prize-giving ceremony in Dublin. Two Students, Adhamh Tuohy from Moyvilla and Darragh Hynes from Palmerstown represented the class. They travelled to Dublin with Maureen Madden and Principal teacher, Mrs Anne Keary. The presentation took place in the ENFO headquarters on Andrew Street.

Derek Mooney presented the children with their cheque. Refreshments were then served. Afterwards the children went on a tour of Dublin City and also visited the Book of Kells in Trinity College. Then to put the finishing touch to a wonderful day, Minister Frank Fahy treated them to a tour of Leinster House. On their return to School the boys told their class about their day in Dublin and illustrations of the Book of Kells were studied, decorated and are still on display.

New project

On foot of their artistic achievements the pupils have undertaken a new project. A replica Athenry hurling team now stands outside the school. Each player is named, numbered and correctly positioned. In September, they hope to complete the project by adding mini advertising hoardings, which will carry the names of local businesses that can have their logo advertised at a modest price.

The Luck of the Lisheen will hopefully extend to the hurlers — in real life that is!
