The Wild Places – A Poem -April 2006

I feel inspired by Fr. Ciaran Blake’s article in Athenry News edition 3 “Irish Spirituality”, to share with you some of my inspirations from nature.
The Wild Places
Where there is space for everything
Shelter and wide-open places
Wise old hawthorn
Moss and ivy clinging to your breast
Evening sun warming red rocks
By a mucky gap where only cows dare
Up to their knees
Cooling
Rising scent of mother earth
April gusts keeping me alert and you, for hundreds of years
Un-bending
Gently quietly moved by the breeze
Giving in
At one
Forever yourself and always connected
Weathered it’s true
Weathered majestically
Warm in your soul
Shelter and solace for me
Protection to the delicate growth
In your shade
Giving life
Nurturing the life beneath your canopy
I thank you from my very soul
For speaking to me this beauty
Your lichens giving colour and depth, I thank you
My Burren gardens love of my heart
You evening song before dark
Fading light showing the stillness of your being
I thank you
