Writer’s Group – Christmas 2000

Home » Library » The Athenry Journal » Record

An exciting new group has been set-up in Athenry. The Athenry Writers group meets on a Wednesday morning at 10.30.am. for two hours in the ADC Offices on the Monivea Road. The group under the tutelage of Marie Holmes, poet, dramatist and writer, is affiliated to N.U.I. Galway and supported by the Adult Education Office at the V.E.C. in Loughrea.

The aim of the group is to produce a book of it’s own work. No writing experience is necessary. This is a group for people who write, or want to write; for writers of prose, poetry, diaries, plays, tales, short stories or novels.

So whether you’re a budding Barbara Cartland, a closet le Corre or a would -be Wordsworth- this is the place for you and should not be missed. Tá fáilte roimh scríbhnóirí Gaeilge. For information please contact Fiona Kelly at the ADC office.

Quotes:

“The Writers Group has provided me with the discipline to write. It gives confidence to the writers in the sense that you have to produce material in your chosen genre and you are encouraged to read it out”.

“Secondly one’s confidence grows through the very positives support given by our writer Marie Holmes. This support is vital, I wouldn’t miss Wednesday mornings for the world”. Joanne Dowling

Not being cerebrally challenged these days, I want to re-activate my brain. I think its working and I’m really enjoying the exercises and course.” Mary Delaney, Oranmore

“Logically speaking there’s no reason on earth why a dozen people who think they can‘t write should get together for two hours a week and talk about how difficult it is. However, the sharing of the misery and Marie ability to inject enthusiasm into the laziest of writers – me – generate an energy, and buzz that can barely be contained on paper. It doesn’t matter whether you always wanted to write or started and life stopped you-the group will get your creative juices flowing. “But bring your own mug“. Gary Shrimpton.

“I wanted to do this for years. Marie infuses us all with such enthusiasm and encouragement. Great to break through the fear barrier and read aloud to others”. Deirdre Herbert
