John Morrissey, Chairman of the club: It is indeed a pleasure and honour for me to be Chairman of the Athenry Camogie Club as we celebrate our 21 years.

As I look back over the years, I feel we must have been the most successful club in the county. This was not achieved without a great deal of hard work and dedication by players, managers, trainers and selectors.

Over the last number of years, the club has participated in under age competition for the first time. This guarantees a successful club for many years to come. I would like to thank everyone who has put so much time and hard work into the club over the years.

A special word of thanks to the Committee who put a lot of time and effort into organising the club’s 21st year celebrations. I hope you enjoy celebrating our 21 years of camogie in Athenry.

Frank O’Shea, Gerard Connaughton; Editor, Ann Barrett and Noreen Tracey

Gerard Connaughton edited the booklet: After 21 years of camogie in Athenry and with the Club having won every honour in the game including eight Senior County Galway and Connacht titles, appeared in six All-Ireland Club Finals, and winning the Final in 1977, the publication of this book is to mark the achievement of these girls and to celebrate 21 years of success.

This book would not have been written without in the help of Noreen Treacy and Breda Coady who are part of the club since its foundation. I am proud to be part of the Club and I am thankful to Frank O’Shea for inviting me to join the Club, and I hope that in the years ahead we will see more success.

The beginning of Athenry Camogie: The person who started Camogie in Athenry was Gilbert McCarthy. He was the first Secretary of the Club and retained that position for a number of years. He was also the team trainer. Without any shadow of a doubt in the early years Gilbert did most to put the Athenry Camogie Club “on the map”. Gilbert got great assistance at that time from Christy Kelly and Anthony Poniard. Gilbert’s most successful year was in 1977 when they won the All-Ireland Club Final.

We are grateful to The Connacht Tribune and The Tuam Herald for allowing us to use reports from their newspapers, and to all other people who supplied information and photographs.
