Twenty-seven athletes were honoured at the second annual sports scholarships presentation at University College Galway recently.

Senior, Galway, Ireland / Cross Country/Track Co-Captain Paul McNamara is the most improved athlete on the team…recorded personal bests in the 1,500, 5,000 and 10,000m in 1996-97…Will battle for the top spot on the cross- country team…earned Big East Academic All-Star honours in 1996 and 1997. 1996-97 Earned a 10th-place finish in the 5,000 m at the Big East Outdoor Championship on 5/3…Was 12th in the 5,000 (14:23.22) at the Penn Relays (4/24)… finished third in the 1,500 meters (3:51.50) at the Brown Invitational (4/20)…placed 6th in the 3,000 (8:25.60) at the IC4A’s Indoor Championship (3l2)..earned All-New England honours by finishing 1st in the 5,000m (14:31.57) at the New England Championship (2/21)…finished 10th in the 5,000 at the Big East Indoor Championship (2/l5)…placed sixth in the mile at the New England Challenge 1/17)…won the mile (4:19.16) at Boston University on 12/7…Was PC’s third finisher (103rd overall) at NCAA Cross Country Championship (11/25) finished 60th (30:40) and scored at the IC4A Cross Country Championship on 11/16… placed 20th (24:29) at the Big East Cross Country Championship (1 1/1) finished 14th (24:32) and scored at the New England Cross Country Championship on 10/18 was PC’s second finisher and 18th overall (25:00) at the Roy Griak Cross Country Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn, on 9/28…finished fourth (24:55) at a quad. Meet at UNH (9/7).

Paul recently received a scholarship from University College Galway, where Paul is taking a Higher Diploma in Analysis Systems. The scholarship is worth £1,500.

Brian Mooney (Handicap 2) was a member of the County team which won the County Inter County Championship in 1995. He played on all Connacht teams. He was golfer of the year in Athenry GC in 1996.

Brian won best individual in the Kenny Cup in Roscommon where he set a new course record, best individual in Portumna GC in the Irish Youths Tournament, equalling the course record of 68. He was also 6th in the Irish Boys’ Championship.

He captained his school team (Pres. College Athenry) in the Golf Foundation and Tony Kearney Trophies. The school reached the final in the Tony Kearney Trophy. Brian finished 2nd in the All- Ireland Golf Foundation tournament.

Shane Donohue from the famed Athenry hurling club was honoured for his achievements for both club and county. Shane has won u-14, u-16, minor, junior, intermediate and senior championship medals with Athenry and has represented Galway at u-l4,u-16 and minor level for the past two years. Shane is studying for his B. Comm. degree. He attended  National school at Athenry and second level at Presentation College. At present Shane is a member of the Freshers and Fitzgibbon hurling panels at Galway University.
